The Girl Who Helped The Poor

In the days of old there was a girl named Sarah. People still talk about her today in 2009! The world Sarah lived in was cruel and unkind to the poor.  She wanted to help them in any way she could.  Sometimes she stole money from the rich to give to the poor; sometimes she used her wisdom to outwit the rich.  In all things she wanted to be fair and kind and just. Sarah was very pretty, gentle, and brave.  There are many stories and songs written about her.  Here is a story about the girl who helped the poor.

Once there was a young lady named Sarah.  She and her group of friends helped the poor.  They hated the rich because this was the time when they treated the poor like slaves. One day Sarah was up in a tree looking out for rich people.  Sarah wasn’t in the tree for long, when she saw a girl skipping happily down the road.  “I will not bother that girl for she is so happy,” mumbled Sarah to herself.

The next day, Sarah was sitting in the same tree when the same girl came down the road, but she looked  very mad.  Sarah jumped down out of the tree and said, “Do you have any money to give me?”  “No, I only have a few cents and a bracelet,” replied the girl.  “May I see the bracelet?” asked Sarah.  The girl took a beautiful flower bracelet out of her pocket.  “Ah, a friendship bracelet!” exclaimed Sarah.  “Yes, I was going to give it to my friend who is very rich.  My mother used to work at her house as a maid, and I would play with the girl of the house.  Her name is Clairafina.  My Mother ended up getting sick and died.  My Father decided to move to a new town to find better work.  I have to work now too, to make ends meet.  I had a few days free so I decided to go visit Clairafina.  Her father let me stay the night, but wouldn’t let me play with her, nor speak to her.  Now I am on my way home and feeling very sad.”  “What is your name?” asked Sarah.  “Millie,” replied the girl.  “I will help you win your friend today,” said Sarah.  “O, thank you, thank you!” exclaimed Millie.

Sarah and Millie went to Clairafina’s house and knocked on the door.  A man in a very fine suit came to the door.  Sarah said, “Let your daughter be friends with Millie. Just because Millie is poor shouldn’t mean she can’t be friends with your daughter.”  Then Clairafina came to the door and ran to Millie and hugged her.  “Who do you choose, Millie or a rich girl to be your friend?” asked Sarah.  “Millie!” replied  Clairafina.  “Then Millie will be your friend.” said Sarah.  And the three girls went off together leaving a mad father behind.
