Every year Dan's school holds a Martin Luther King Jr. banquet, in honor of his dream. This is hosted by Dan's department, Multicultural/International Student Affairs along with the Black Student Association. It is a time of celebrating the life of Martin Luther King, recoginizing student achievement, sharing good food, listening to the gospel choir, and being inspired to work harder and dream big dreams. Each year a number of awards are given out to students, and this year, an award was added to the program, the Dream Keepers Award. Dan's co-worker Charles (pictured above) explains it this way:
"I came up with the idea to give an award to some one who strives to uphold Dr. King's principles~bridging the gap between the university and community, promoting diversity, someone willing to take a stand for voiceless people, encouraging people to learn about different cultures and their life experiences, someone who is walking the walk and willing to stand firm in his or her beliefs, and respecting the differences in all of us."
Well, to our surprise, Dan was the first recipient of this award! He had no idea he would be receiving this; all those involved did a good job keeping it a secret! Congratulations Dan!
