I belong to a professional association for international educators, and today was our Indiana state conference. It is in a different spot each year, and this year’s was at Purdue University. It was my first visit to the campus, so I went up a tad early so I could walk around the campus. All the trees were in bloom and everything looked really pretty.
Throughout the years, I’ve made several visits to Wisconsin University at Madison. The “feeling” I always got there was – PARTY SCHOOL. Well, the feeling I got at Purdue, which I was happy for, was STUDY SCHOOL (note to self: good possible school for DJ). It was a Sunday night, and students were studying everywhere – every available space. Libraries were packed, students were studying at Taco Bell, and out on the grass. Another impressive site was one student who was riding his skateboard and texting on his phone at the same time. I wondered if he could find a way to make some money with that kind of talent.
As I went around campus, I stopped students to talk with them. Everyone had some major like “mechanical-bio-neuro-psychology” (well, maybe not exactly like that, but it seemed like it).
I met one couple who was from Turkey (pictured below) and they were there to visit their son who is a Purdue student. They spoke only broken English but the husband managed to tell me that he was a navy captain.
Oh, and yes, I had an interesting conference. It is always nice to gather with my colleagues discuss the world’s problems.
