Last weekend, when I usually talk or highlight something from our home school week, was filled with various activities so that I didn't get a chance to post. I wanted to highlight what Sarah has been doing in the subject of writing.
We use Classical Writing for our writing course. I have copied a description of this program from their website:
"Classical Writing is a writing curriculum for beginners all the way through high school. Our
method is based on the ancient Greek
progymnasmata, a writing tradition which has produced many of the best thinkers, authors, and statesmen of the past two thousand years. We believe, along with the ancients, that training in writing cannot be separated from training in virtue. Our aim is to teach students the art of putting virtuous thoughts into words — true, beautiful, and persuasive words."
I have very much enjoyed using this program. Incorporated into the course are the subjects of: Grammar, Spelling, Vocabulary, Dictation, and, of course, Writing. There is a wealth of information about this style of writing on the Classical Writing website and I encourage you to visit their site if looking for a writing course that uses classical methods.
Without further ado, here is Sarah's story from last week:
The King and His Castle
Once there was a German king named Terrines. All his councilors would say, “Oh king, you are the greatest man in the world. You can do anything.” Terrines knew this was not true. One day he took his councilors out to the front of his castle and he asked them, “Am I the most powerful man in the world?” “Yes, you are very powerful,” replied his officers. “Can I turn my castle into a little cottage?” the king asked. The councilors were puzzled but said, “Of course you can, you are the most powerful man in the world.” The Duke said, “Castle get rid of all your treasures and turn into a little cottage!” The castle did nothing and Terrines said, “Now you see, officers, that I am not the greatest man in the world. You need to worship the one true god, who created us, not me. The men did, and Terrines was very happy.
