Going to the apple orchard

This week was our monthly field trip with other home schoolers in our area. I always look forward to our fall trips as we go to places I tremendously enjoy, like the apple orchard!

We have a wonderful orchard 10 minutes north of us. The orchard "house" is set on a hill and the smell of apple pie comes wafting out to you when you open its doors. Our time was first spent out on the front porch, receiving a little lesson about growing apples and how the orchard got started. We then proceeded to take a tour of the orchard grounds, finishing up with getting to pick an apple of our choice. Granny Smith, Fuji, Ambrosia, Honey Crisp, and Gala are some of the varieties the orchard grows. It ended up being quite hot out in the sun and all of us were thankful to go back inside for some fresh apple cider.

After resting for awhile, we went upstairs to the deck and worked on our apple prints. It ended being a little windy, so we had to make sure our papers were secured down. One mother got a little messy as a paper came flying at her that wasn't quite dried. As I worked on the craft with half of the kids, another mother read Johnny Appleseed to the other half.

To finish up, we all went back downstairs to buy our goodies! We ended up taking away two pecks of Gala apples for applesauce making, a bag of Honeycrisps for eating, and some mini gourds for our nature table. It was fun, but exhausting!
